Spoiler
1. Lara Croft; is she as sexy as ever?
Sexy? Yes, but not in the same way as before. Forget the buxom chest and hot pants. From now on Lara is going to be more human, and even though her face remains identical, her demeanor no longer has the same air of self assurance. Crystal dynamics want to create an entirely new way in which the fans will become attached to our heroine. They want the player to feel concerned about Lara and what happens to her. They want the player to all they can to protect her help her to survive the cursed island.
2. Does this follow on from Underworld?
No. Absolutely not! Far from it in fact. This is a new adventure that will unfold before even the first Tomb Raider. A prequel that will see a young Croft transform into a true adventurer. The Lara Croft who is sure of herself and who is invincible is no more. This new instalment of Tomb Raider sees a young, vulnerable and sometimes frightened girl. Her journey on the island, the horrors that she will have to face will shape her and make her the woman we all know her as.
3. What is the story of the new Tomb Raider?
Forget everything you know about Lara Croft. Here, Lady Croft (H?riti?re Is French for heiress) is a young 21 years old. Hardly out of university, she joined Captain Conrad Roth’s team in order to take part in a mission exploring the seas just off Japan’s coast. During the voyage, the team’s research vessel is caught in a terrible storm and crashes on a mysterious island. Lara loses consciousness and wakes up in a cave, hanging by her feet in some sort of cocoon.
4. Is Lara the only survivor?
No. Other members of the expedition have survived, primarily Lara’s mentor Conrad Roth. Gravely injured by the wreckage, Lara must help him get back to camp, before leaving, alone, in search of a light house to find help. Later she finds more members of the team. However she must be cautious as not all of them will be trustworthy.
5. Why a reboot?
During the last few years, despite the quality of the last 3 Tomb Raider titles offered by Crystal Dynamics, the series was losing steam. In the face of competition and games like Uncharted, Tomb Raider has never quite been able to get back into the spotlight. The last titles used tired method of plat forming and puzzles. With this reboot, Crystal and Square hope to get Lara back to the top.
6. What secrets does the Island hold?
It’s still too early to say. What’s sure though is that the island is hiding its fair share of secrets. Upon leaving the cavern, Lara is amazed to find the ravages of the island, in front of her as far as the eye can see are shipwrecks from different eras; galleons, cargo ships, and liners. How is it that this island manages to draw in all these different ships? Who are its inhabitants? And why do they want to sacrifice the new arrivals? So many mysteries Lara must unravel by exploring the island from top to bottom.
7. Which creatures must Lara fight?
This is still a mystery. All we know is that in advancing through the heart of the caves Lara quickly discovers that they are inhabited by degenerate humans. Enemies who sacrifice the new arrivals on altars constructed to worship a mysterious entity. Initially they attempt to convince Lara that they are friendly. But we assure you, they are anything but! On top of these human enemies, it could be that once out of the cave Lara will encounter different types of terrifying monsters.
8. Will the game be open world?
Yes and no. It won’t be open world in the same way as GTA, but more in the same style as ‘Darksiders’ . So, Lara can freely explore the island, going from place to place retracing her steps. The further she advances in the game, the more abilities she will learn that will allow her to get to places that were inaccessible beforehand.
9. Will there be plat forming elements?
Of course! If there is one thing from Tomb Raider that hasn’t changed, it’s definitely that. More than ever, Lara must explore her environment, but more in the manner of Uncharted. Plat forming sections are made to be more nerve racking and cinematic by the use of impressive scripted events. For example, although she will be climbing up a wall, it will start to crumble away. Lara must then not only continue climbing but avoid the falling debris.
10. How will combat play out?
The traditional auto-aim system is gone. From now on Lara can aim freely. The bouts of combat will be much more tense and more vicious. Lara will have to be able to battle with a vast array of weaponry. Benefiting from the fact that the island has drawn in different vessels from different ages, Lara will be able to recover many varied weapons; a machete, an axe, a bow, a shotgun and a handgun… But the bow will be Lara’s principle weapon.
11. Will the player have to solve puzzles?
Yes. Riddles and puzzles, an integral part of Tomb Raider, make their return but in a completely new way. From now on, the majority of puzzles will be more realistic and depend upon Lara studying her environment. They will use the physics of the game and the elements also; water, fire etc… For example, to unblock a passage obstructed by explosive barrels, Lara must find a way to set them alight, but from a distance. How to do it? One must use the flow of water nearby to carry the flaming boxes to the barrels.
12. What are the sources of inspiration for TOMB RAIDER?
There are many sources of inspiration. One thing is sure however, it’s a long way from Indiana Jones. When we think of the story of a mysterious island , we think of ‘Lost.’ Form the atmosphere of the game, Crystal Dynamics seem to clearly want to take from those of survival horror titles. We think of Silent Hill and of Dead Space also during their scary moments. In terms of cinema, we have seen big references to ‘The Decent’ and ‘The Hills Have Eyes’ for the parts inside the caves.
13. Is this game more mature than the previous ones?
Yes. Absolutely! Considering the theme of survival in this game, we will have to wait for a PEGI rating to see if the game will be playable for gamers under 16 years of age. The ambience is grim, the attacks are brutal. If the player reaches a game over situation cut scenes akin to those in Dead Space , sometimes violent and often radical play showing the final moments of Lara’s life. Whether she is being stabbed by a creature or her head being crushed by a falling rock, one thing we can say is that Crystal Dynamics want to make you jump and tremble.
14. How will we move about the island?
For the moment, we know that Lara will explore the island on foot. But to avoid any annoying backtracking, Crystal has elaborated a system of camp sites that will serve as our adventurer’s base. The more of the island Lara discovers, the more camps she will unlock that will allow her to quickly ‘teleport’ from one place to another. But Lara could also return there on foot…. We remember in fact, that in the first pieces of concept art seen Lara rode a horse. Maybe this will be confirmed in time.
15. How will Lara survive?
That’s a good question because Lara’s survival is at the core of the game. Hypothetically it will be a bit like MGS3. Lara must hunt for food and eat, Learn to treat her wounds and even drink water. On passing through the different encampments, Lara will also be able to unlock new abilities, gain upgrades and new weapons. She must also learn to combine objects that she finds on her travels to create new equipment.
VERDICT;
How can we not be enthusiastic for this new Tomb Raider? We can do nothing but congratulate the Crystal Dynamics’ and Square’s courage in rebooting an already prestigious franchise. They’re taking a big risk and it’s one that we hope will pay off. In any case, the franchise going towards a more ‘adventure-survival-horror’ is something that both surprises and excites us more than we can say.
